Walk a Volcano and Peer into the Past

Mount Vesuvius, one of only two active volcanoes in Continental Europe, stands at 1,281 meters and is a popular destination for tourists. Visitors can hike the 4 km trail to the crater’s rim, offering stunning views of the Bay of Naples, Pompeii ruins, and the Campanian Plain. The hike is suitable for all levels, with a slight change in altitude of about 140 meters. Shuttles and buses from Pompeii and Herculaneum take visitors up to the ticket office at 1,050 meters, where the trail begins. Along the way, you’ll pass scenic views of Punta Nasone, maritime pines, and the Valle dell’Inferno. The Volcanological Observatory, founded in 1841, offers expert guides for those wanting to learn more.
