The Most Famous Roman Fountains

The Trevi Fountain, Rome’s most famous fountain, is a stunning masterpiece fed by the Vergine aqueduct, still in use today. Commissioned by Pope Clement XII in 1732, the fountain was designed by architect Nicola Salvi. It features a grand basin with a dramatic cliff, showcasing the statue of Oceanus riding a chariot pulled by two horses. Reliefs on the façade depict the legend of the source and the aqueduct’s history.

The fountain is also known for the tradition of throwing a coin to ensure your return to Rome. For romance, toss a second coin to bring love into your life. The Trevi Fountain was immortalized in La Dolce Vita, where Anita Ekberg famously wades through its waters
