Julius Caesar’s Final Steps

Discovered in 1926, Largo di Torre Argentina reveals four ancient Republican temples dating from the 4th to 2nd centuries BC. The temples, labelled A to D, remain partially unidentified but are linked to deities like Feronia and Fortuna. Temple B, circular in shape, may honour Fortuna huiusce diei and once held a grand acrolith statue. After a major fire in 80 AD, Emperor Domitian restored the site with travertine paving. Temple A later housed a church, still visible with its Cosmatesque floor. The area also includes the Curia of Pompey, where Julius Caesar was famously assassinated in 44 BC
