Rising above the hill of Assisi, the Papal Basilica of Saint Francis and the Sacred Convent is a breathtaking sight and a major pilgrimage destination. This vast complex features two churches - an Upper and a Lower Church - built to honour Saint Francis. The Lower Church, completed in 1230, houses his tomb and is adorned with frescoes by Giotto, Cimabue, Simone Martini, and Pietro Lorenzetti. The crypt below, built in 1818, contains the saint’s stone coffin and the tombs of his closest companions…
